How do you make an impact⦠when you can not be in every room at once?
This year, I have been experimenting with how to bring AI tools into my middle school classroom β not to replace what I do, but to extend it. Specifically, I wanted my students to have support on their projects during the times when I am not available, like when they are working at home.
Enter Gemini Notebook β my secret weapon and co-teacher.
Here is how it works in my classroom. Every lesson starts the same way: I run an intro that pulls students in and gets them verbally collaborating with each other. Then it is time to introduce the project. By this point, they are usually tired of hearing my voice β so I mix it up. I invite my Gemini Notebook video friends into the classroom.
What themes have you tried using in your instructional videos to engage students?
These are AI-generated video overviews that pick up exactly where our class conversation left off. Thanks to my planning and prompting, each video introduces the project based on the background information I provide and a link to our project website. The video wraps up with a walkthrough of the project rubric.
When the video ends, I step back onto the stage and go through it a second time β this time in more detail, with the ability for students to ask questions. They have already heard the core ideas once from a different voice, so now the questions are sharper and the discussion goes deeper.
The game changer
Every project now comes with a link to a public Gemini Notebook notebook (Click Here to View a Classroom Project Notebook). Because of this, my students β and their parents β can get 1:1 help directly from me and my materials anytime they need it outside of the classroom. No waiting until Monday. No frantic emails at 9 PM.
And here is the part I did not expect: the questions students ask Gemini Notebook get saved as sources. That means the struggles and curiosities from this semester become resources I can reference and discuss in future semesters. The tool literally gets smarter the more my students use it.
Why this matters for you
You do not need to be a tech expert to try this. Gemini Notebook is free with any Google account. You upload your materials β rubrics, project guides, lesson notes, website links β and it turns them into an interactive assistant that sounds like you, teaches like you, and is available when you cannot be.
