Fifteen years ago today, I did something that scared me half to death: I hit record.
How it started
The idea for TeacherCast was born on a drive up the New Jersey Turnpike. My wife and I were talking about how teachers almost never get the chance to learn from each other — that all the best ideas were locked inside individual classrooms. So I bought the cheapest microphone I could find, sat down, and started a podcast for teachers, by a teacher.
I had no idea if a single person would listen.
Fifteen years later, that scrappy little show has grown into 2,000+ episodes reaching educators in 180+ countries. I still can’t quite believe it — and it only happened because of you.
This past year brought some surprises
I never set out chasing recognition — I just wanted to help teachers. So this year genuinely caught me off guard:
- ISTE+ASCD “20 to Watch” (2025) and a Featured Speaker spot (2026) — proof that the teachers-helping-teachers idea we started on a podcast still matters.
- My first book, Impact Standards — fifteen years of your questions, your classrooms, and your feedback, finally down on paper.
What 15 years taught me
A few lessons that have stuck with me:
- Teachers helping teachers is the most powerful PD there is. No conference beats a great conversation between two educators.
- Systems beat hustle. The magic isn’t in working harder — it’s in building repeatable systems so you can show up consistently without burning out.
- Done and shared beats perfect and hidden. That first episode was rough. Sharing it anyway changed my life.
- The tools change; the mission doesn’t. Fifteen years of new tech, one constant goal: help teachers and leaders do their best work.
