🚀 Impact System #014

Start with the problem, not the app: Problem → People → Tool

The order that makes any new idea actually stick — whether you teach 25 students, coach 25 teachers, or lead a whole building.

How do you make an impact with all this technology… when every new tool feels like “one more thing” on an already-full plate?

Here’s the trap almost everyone falls into — me included.

We lead with the tool.

“Try this app.” “Have you seen this platform?” “This will fix it.”

But tools don’t create change. People do. So the order matters — and it’s the same order no matter who you’re helping:

  • A teacher doesn’t need another app — she needs her quietest student to finally speak up.
  • A coach doesn’t need a new platform to push — he needs the teacher down the hall to feel supported, not managed.
  • An administrator doesn’t need one more rollout — she needs an initiative teachers are still using in November.

Same truth every time: name the problem, understand the people, then reach for the tool.

The 3-minute move

Before you introduce any tool — to a student, a colleague, or your whole staff — ask these in order:

  1. “What’s the real problem we’re trying to solve?” (Not the tool. The problem.)
  2. “What have we already tried?” (Honor the effort before adding to it.)
  3. “What’s one small change we could test together this week?”

Only after those three questions does a tool earn its place. Nine times out of ten, the right tool becomes obvious — and the buy-in is already there.

Why this works

People support what they help build. When you start with the problem and the person instead of the product, the tool stops feeling like “one more thing” and starts feeling like the answer to a question someone actually asked.

That’s the whole idea behind Impact Standards: systems serve people, not the other way around.

One quick reply

Hit reply with one sentence: what’s the “one more tool” currently sitting unused in your world? I read every response — and your answer might shape a future issue.
